Episode 1: What's in Erbie?!? SEASON 2 LAUNCH!
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." -Albert Einstein
In Episode 1 of our NEW SEASON!, we traveled to Erbie, Arkansas for a one night overlanding trip. We just got our Roam Vagabond rooftop tent installed this week and were anxious to get it out for a test run! We started planning the trip midweek and were lucky to get a few other riders interested in making the trip with us.
The week ended in a mix of winter weather and cold, but this didn't stop us from setting out. Fortune favored the bold, and we were blessed with a weekend of excellent weather.
We learned about Erbie from Mike (check out his Mitsubishi Montero here) who asked if we wanted to plan a stop in on this area before we headed further south. When we arrived in Erbie, we made the group decision to spend the day checking out all this ghost town had to offer.
Our first stop was the incredible Old Erbie Church. This building is in remarkable condition and the front door is left unlocked welcoming visitors to explore. It's rare to find a piece of history this well preserved without being commercialized. We found Erbie was full of these treasures.
The Parker-Hickman Farmstead offered more of the same. It was incredibly well maintained with its doors unlocked and welcoming visitors. The original home and out buildings gave us all the opportunity to experience the history of the Ozarks.
We ate lunch next to the stream then took the road up the hill to an old cemetery. The kids would have been happy playing and exploring here all day. There were a few hiking trails that we'd like to venture down in the future.
The Buffalo River snakes through this community and gave us the opportunity to do several water crossings. I'm always amazed by the beautiful emerald water in Arkansas and by all the remarkable views the Natural State has to offer!
We set up camp along the Buffalo River just in time to discover we had a broken front axle shaft. Thankfully we were able to make it home safely, and the mechanics didn't ruin too much of our fun.
Our Roam tent and annex worked perfectly for our family. These Disc-O-Bed bunks fit perfectly in the annex section for the kids. They had a great time hanging out in their own little area. We put our propane heater in the bottom section which was enough to keep us warm all night with the outside temperatures dropping into the 20s.
We had a great night cooking, drinking cocoa, and talking by the fire enjoying this beautiful part of the Ozarks!
